Antique English Hand Carved Staddle Stone, Early 1800s
This is an early 19th century English staddle stone. Staddle stones usually had a separate head and base which gave the whole structure a ‘mushroom’ like appearance carved from the local stone, the conical base and separate round top would indicate this staddle stone is originally from the Hampshire region of England. Staddle stones were originally used as supporting bases for granaries. The staddle stones lifted the granaries above the ground thereby protecting the stored grain from animals and ground. This lovely staddle stone will add English charm to your home or garden.
